LYRICS

WE’VE ALL FELT THE WIND ON OUR FACE
WE’VE ALL LOOKED UP AND TRIED TO PONDER SPACE
WE’VE ALL SPENT SOME TIME IN A BROKEN PLACE
WE HAVE ALL THAT IN COMMON

WE’VE ALL FELT THE WARMTH OF LOVE
WE’VE ALL FELT THE STING OF HATE
AND THE PUSH AND SHOVE
WE’VE ALL WONDERED IF THERE’S HELP FROM ABOVE
WE HAVE ALL THAT IN COMMON
COMMON COMMON

WE’VE ALL HAD SOME DIRT UNDER OUR NAILS
WE’VE ALL CRIED AND HAD THE WIND KNOCKED FROM OUR SAILS
WE ALL UNDERSTAND WHAT IT’S LIKE WHEN YOUR STRENGTH FAILS
WE HAVE ALL THAT IN COMMON
COMMON COMMON COMMON COMMON

WE’VE ALL BEEN SEEN WITH A GLIMMER IN OUR EYE
AIMED FOR THE TRUTH BUT ONLY HIT THE LIES
MADE A LOT OF NOISE BUT LET THE SOUND DIE
WE’VE GOT ALL THIS IN COMMON
COMMON COMMON COMMON COMMON

WE BREATHE THE SAME AIR THAT WE DIDN’T PUT HERE
WE DRINK THE WATER FROM THE SKY
WE EAT THE FRUIT FROM A THOUSAND TREES
UNSATISFIED
COMMON COMMON COMMON COMMON

LINER NOTES

There’s a lot of things in the world that make no sense. The big one for me is the junk that humans do to each other. Whichever ism or schism one might blame for it, it’s hard to imagine all the people united, caring for each other and solving our problems globally. We entertain the notion but have no comprehensive, executable idea what it would take to bring about unity at scale. I suppose those thoughts are what made this song form. The words are hoping to drill down to bottom line things we share; breathing air, drinking water, the wind on our face, the warmth of love, pain of hate, making mistakes, etc., and it helps me to think that way.

My favorite band is here again, and the vocals are exactly what I hoped for - soulful grit delivered by a new friend - Forrest “Woody” Mankowski. Great man and talent, and I thank Jeff Babko for the intro. The harmony vocals make me think of Timothy B. Schmidt, and the point of the block harmony was to be as declarative as possible. In the words of Eugene Levy, let’s, “Go where the love is.”
